These drawings of the tentacles are highly diagramatic. In Pyroteuthis addolux (top drawing) photophore number 2 is absent in a majority of the squid from Hawaiian waters. Photophores 4-6 are double photophores with the smaller organ located at the distal end of the larger organ. In photophore 3 the smaller organ is absent although photophore number 2 possibly represents this organ. In P. margaritifera (bottom drawing) the smaller organ in each double organ lies on the middle of the aboral surface of the larger organ rather than at the distal tip. In P. serrata (middle drawing) the position of the smaller organ in each double organ is unknown and is arbitrarily placed in the distal position in the drawing. Note the difference in the number and position of the large organs between the three species. Organ number 2 may or may not be homologous between Pyroteuthis addolux and P. margaritifera and is absent in P. serrata. A photograph of photophores 1- 6 in P. addolux can be seen here.
