This tree diagram shows the relationships between several groups of organisms.

The basal branching point in the tree represents the ancestor of the other groups in the tree. This ancestor diversified over time into several descendent subgroups, which are represented as internal nodes and terminal taxa to the right.

A large genus, ranging from Mexico to Argentina. Most species occur in cloud forest, and none has been recorded from the Amazonian lowlands, although the group is present in the Atlantic coastal forest of Brazil (Miller, 2009). Known larval hosts include a range of plant families, including Celtidaceae, Ericaceae, Sapindaceae and Euphorbiaceae. Miller notes that there are at least 25 undescribed species occurring in the Andean cloud forests, and that the genus may eventually contain more than 100 species.Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships
Miller (2009) has conducted a preliminary cladistic analysis based on morphological features of a subset of exemplar species, and divided Polypoetes into five species groups. The large Haruspex Group is sister taxon to the remaining Etearchus, Rufipuncta, Persimilis and Rubribasis groups. The topology shown is based on his discursive descriptions of relationships among members of the genus.References
