Characteristics
Paraponera is characterized by the following derived traits (Bolton 2003):- With bipartite antennal scrobes, dorsal portion above eye and ventral portion below it
- Abdominal segment III distinctly reduced compared to IV
- Petiole with a long anterior peduncle
- Hypopygium armed along lateral margin with a row of spines
