The Eurygeniinae subfamily consist of three tribes, 30 recent genera and a single fossil genus. Among the Eurygeniinae are the largest representatives of the family Anthicidae with a total body lenght up to 18 mm. Body slender and elongate. Members of this subfamily are known from all biogeographic realms (with exception of the Antarctic), being most diverse in Australia, Nearctic and Neotropical regions. Many genera have been revised by M. Abdullah in the 1960-ies, but several of them with no doubt should be carefully re-examined and the status of several of the genera needs to be re-evaluated.
Characteristics
Frontoclypeal suture absent, frons gradually declivous. Mandibles broad and bidentate apically. Eyes large and anterior margin more or less distinctly emarginate. Neck broad, about 1/3 to 1/2 of maximum head width, coarsely strigose.
Anterior margin of pronotum with dorsal rim protruding and ventral rim distinctly narrower. Antebasal sulcus well developed.
Mesosternum triangular.
Metacoxae contiguous or separated by narrow acute intercoxal projection of the first sternite.
Legs with distinct tibial spurs.
Male genitalia with phallobase and tegmen distinct. Penis free.
